A little more about me and how we can work together

Often habits are helpful but sometimes they are not, and in this case they can really get in the way of how we'd like to live our lives. Unhelpful habits are an automatic way of responding to a given stimulus that will almost always bring some kind of reduction in stress, anxiety, emotional distress, agitation or boredom. With simple habits like nail-biting, hair pulling etc we use an approach called Habit Reversal Training. This approach involves you learning to become aware of what triggers your habit, when you do it, how you do it and building a new competing habit that you can then enact to block the old habit. The process really is that simple and with motivation, positive expectation and social support we can get rid of these unhelpful habits in just a few sessions.

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, an estimated 12.5% of U.S. adults will experience a phobia at some point in their lifetimes. A phobia is an overwhelming and debilitating fear of an object, place, situation, feeling or animal. We will begin by teaching you an effective relaxation technique and then together will build a list or hierarchy of situations where you experience fear. During hypnosis we will then systematically desensitize you to these situations by having you imagine being in those situations whilst practicing deep relaxation at the same time. In addition we will be analyzing your thoughts and behaviors and making any positive changes where necessary. With this multi model approach you will begin to build a new automatic calm, relaxation response to these feared situations and be able to experience this out in the real world.

You will learn a rapid relaxation technique to lower the level of muscle tension and arousal through out the body and then though hypnosis will learn to deepen this relaxation and increase your feelings of self-confidence. During hypnosis we will also have you facing stressful challenging situations while focusing on relaxing the body more deeply, in effect re-conditioning the brain and body to remain calm. In addition we will be looking at your automatic negative thoughts and looking at how we can turn these into more positive, helpful thoughts

An estimated 12.1% of US adults experience social anxiety at some time in their lives. Confidence is a core psychological quality and more than any other enables us to engage with the world and live our life to its fullest. When our confidence is low our sense of ‘I can’ is limited. We have a false perception of ourselves and almost always this is as a result of hearing and believing negative messages about ourselves from others. In CBH the treatment given for low confidence is called ‘ego strengthening’. This increase in self-belief will influence how you think, feel and behave.

Every women will experience peri-menopause and menopause differently. Hot flushes, insomnia, anxiety are just a few of the annoying and sometimes debilitating symptoms experienced. Together we will work out a treatment plan, tailored for you personally, which may include cognitive restructuring, self-esteem and motivation building or hypnotic techniques where you will experience cooling imagery or learn to dial up or down those overwhelming moments of heat. In a 2012 study hypnosis has been shown to reduce hot flashes and night sweats by up to 74%, showing it to be as effective as HRT in managing these symptoms

Cognitive Behavioral Hypnotherapy has therapeutic benefit in many different situations. If you don't see your particular issue here please drop me a line and we can discuss further.
Hypnosis is a natural state of mind that many of us will find ourselves in every day as we become engrossed in a good book or film or maybe concentrating deeply on a school or work report.. Often during therapy hypnosis is combined with relaxation and this allows the participant to deeply focus, undistracted, on a particular chosen idea. In this natural, calm, focussed state you are more suggestible to new ideas and use the experience to practice new thoughts and actions for future use in your daily life.
CBT gives us the techniques to examine your thoughts, feelings and behaviors and work out what might be a more positive, helpful way to be. Mindfulness helps you to step back from your thoughts and enable you to rationally, rather than emotionally consider them. Hypnosis is the mechanism by which we deliver therapeutic change. Together they enable greater change.
No! Please forget any stories you may have heard in regard to hypnotic stage shows. You will only absorb suggestions that you want to absorb. In fact the most clinically significant, recent, development in c hypnosis is the understanding that the power of hypnosis actually resides in the client and not the person guiding the hypnotic exercise.
Astonishingly, ancient hieroglyphics indicate that the Egyptians were using hypnosis as early as 3,000 B.C. Evidence suggests the Greeks and Mayans understood and employed it, as well. Modern clinical hypnotherapy dates back to the late 1700s. Its use as a reliable therapy dramatically increased in the 1950s when both the British Medical Association and the American Medical Association confirmed the efficacy of hypnotherapy.
The feeling of being in hypnosis has been likened to the feeling of daydreaming when you are absorbed in your imagination and an idea. You will know where you are and what is going on around you. Some of the changes you may notice are a slowing of one’s breathing, a feeling of heaviness in your limbs and eyelids, and an awareness of more intensive thought-processing.
Yes, pretty much everyone can be hypnotized to some level. Some people are naturally better hypnotic subjects than others but research has identified the skills required of a hypnotic subject and these can all be learned. Like any new skill the more you practice the better you'll be.
